The sun is our main source for vitamin D.
Vitamin D is essential for regeneration and must be activated by magnesium, to work in the body. It’s difficult to get the vitamin D we need from food, although some foods, such as mushrooms, may help when the sun is not out. Ultraviolet B rays in sunlight are responsible for the production of vitamin D and the rate of production can vary due to several factors such as exposure time, skin tone and time of day.
Generally, half the time it takes for your skin to feel a burning sensation is enough time to produce sufficient vitamin D. This might be a few minutes for fair skinned people and may take longer for darker skinned people. The most effective time is usually midday. If your shadow is longer than your actual height, it means the efficiency of vitamin D is lower.
Vitamin D is essential to the body for the absorption of calcium and for modulating cell growth, immune system functions, and reducing inflammation. Emerging research suggests that vitamin D has a key role in preventing and for treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance and multiple sclerosis.
Vitamin D deficiency can cause thinning of bones, or rickets, making them brittle and mis-shapen, and can lead to other conditions such as osteoporosis and osteomalacia, resulting in increased pain. This is often seen in children who are vitamin D deficient. Reduced vitamin D can also cause severe asthma in children, cognitive impairments, cancer and risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
So we need that sun. We need just short bursts, with protection that also deals with historical damage, without blocking those all-important healing rays.
Our Protective Sun contains Sweet Almond Oil; packed with vitamin E to protect cells from sun damage by reducing DNA damage and chemical and structural changes in the skin that have been caused by the sun’s rays. It also contains Hemp seed oil to help deflect some of the UV rays without affecting the absorption of vitamin D, while deeply nourishing down through the skin layers. We also add moisturising, softening and healing raspberry seed oil. According to a 2000 study, raspberry seed oil offers a 28-50 SPF protection factor against UVB rays. And carrot seed oil is said to have an spf of 35-40. Carrot seed oil is famous for its protection from sun damage, and its collagen boosting anti aging qualities. Avocado oil has the highest SPF of all of the vegetable oils and coats the skin surface with a thin, protective layer that guards it against direct external influences. We all know Aloe Vera is both protective and healing to the skin, and especially protective from sun damage. Frankincense, with an SPF of 57, smooths lines and increases the elasticity of the skin.
So our Protective Sun Balm is just that; a Sun Balm. It’s not a sun block. We recommend shade, or cover up and wear a hat, for the most effective sun block. You need short bursts of sun, and you can use our Protective Sun Balm each time you go out, to protect down through the layers of the skin, and deal with existing damage, while still letting those precious rays through.
