Mouse-ear Hawkweed was recorded as naturalised in New Zealand in 1878. It has a large spreading underground root mass that can be problematic in tussock grasslands, where it’s commonly found.
Fortunately, it’s not really a useless weed!!!!!
In fact, it has traditionally been used as a specific for whooping cough, because it is thought to relax the muscles of the bronchial tubes, stimulate the cough reflex and reduce the production of catarrh.
It has also been used historically for enteritis, pyelitis, cystitis, liver ailments, intestinal inflammations, diarrhoea, to control heavy menstrual bleeding, to ease the coughing up of blood, to stem nosebleeds, flatulence, wound healing, asthma, bronchitis, brucellosis, respiratory infections, emphysema, painful kidney stones, bowel spasms and much more.
Mouse-ear Hawkweed can be drunk as a tea for most purposes.
So, just another amazing example of how nature takes care of our wellness needs.
