Magnesium is essential for Headaches and Brain Health.
Lots of people have been asking me about headaches and brain health recently.
Some scientists believe that magnesium blocks the wave of brain signalling; cortical spreading depression, that leads to migraines with an aura, or changes in vision and other senses.
Research suggests that magnesium may also prevent narrowing of the brain blood vessels, and that magnesium is a natural pain receptor blocker; blocking NMDA pain receptors and inhibiting calcium ions from entering cells.
Magnesium is also believed to relax both the muscles and the nerve sheaths, releasing pressure on the nerves.
It is essential for relaying signals between your brain and body. It regulates N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, which are found on your nerve cells and aid brain development, memory, and learning. Magnesium regulates neurotransmitter signalling in the brain and is key to the neurotransmitter’s glutamate and GABA.
Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of calcium in brain cells.
The brain represents only 2% of the body’s weight but uses 20% of the body’s energy. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the body, must be bound to a magnesium ion to be activated in the body, and without this energy to the brain may be depleted along with cognitive function. It is believed that magnesium enhances the activity of three important enzymes involved in energy production.
Magnesium’s strengthens Synaptic plasticity, which is a process that strengthens synaptic transmission, and which can help delay age-related cognitive decline. A systematic review recently determined that the magnesium levels in those with Alzheimer’s disease were significantly lower than those without. Another study found that, based on the National Health Research Institute Database of Taiwan, those that had used magnesium were less likely to develop dementia.
Increasing brain magnesium levels may lead to increased and rapid production of neural stem cells, which may indicate that brain magnesium may promote the generation of new neurons in adulthood. This process aids the brain to switch between subjects and maintain cognitive flexibility. Magnesium helps in the control of oxidative stress, and inflammatory processes to help maintain efficient brain blood flow.
Sometimes, it’s the simplest things we need. Magnesium is required by the body for more than 300 functions to work properly. It is the activator of vitamin D, which remains dormant in the body until magnesium activates it, no matter how high the vitamin D dose.
