Lamb’s quarter is one of the most common weeds in gardens and back yards.
These edible greens, packed with vital nutrients, AND edible seeds, have been both foraged and cultivated for hundreds of generations.
The nutritious seeds have been eaten for thousands of years in Eurasia, and are currently eaten in Japan, South Africa, Europe, India, and the Americas. Quinoa is closely related.
Lamb’s quarter—also known as wild spinach—is one of the most nutritious greens ever analysed, outcompeting many common vegetables (including domestic spinach) in vitamin and mineral content.
However, it is also high in oxalates, like other beets and spinach, and should, like all things, be eaten in moderation as part of a wider diet.
Lamb’s Quarter has historically been used in medicine for diarrhoea, internal inflammation, stomach aches, loss of appetite, skin irritations, skin health, skin toning and tightening, bug bites, swellings, sunburn, stomach-aches, scurvy, rheumatism, arthritis, toothaches, gout, colic and more.
So add this easy to find herb to your diet, steamed or in soups and stews, and use it in teas and poultices too. What an amazing useful and nutritious herb.
It’s not meant to be complicated to be well.
